Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is an Eastern tool for inquiry that has been under development for well over two thousand years, and has recently been welcomed into Western behavioral science. It is specifically designed to pierce through mental barriers like rumination, distraction, confusion, and doubt, gently guiding us past our stuck points toward seeing things simply and clearly, without judgment. I offer Mindfulness-based Clinical Consultation as a way to share the incredible depth and richness I have found by applying this tool personally and professionally.
Structured Consultation
While the logistical details may be modified to meet your needs, structured consultations generally take place weekly, biweekly or monthly, are 80-90 minutes long, and take place in a small group format of four to six participants. We open with a short, half-hour meditation, during which you are guided to explore a challenging moment in your clinical practice. Then we spend an hour processing together as a group, using theoretical models as well as personal and professional life experiences to make meaning of the emotions, impulses and thoughts that arose during the meditation. Together, the meditation and discussion lead to: hypotheses to test in your clinical practice; clearer, more focused questions to guide professional development choices; and steady growth in confidence in your ability to interpret your own internal cues in and out of session. Thus, you grow in your knowledge of your self in your role as therapist; you take intentional ownership of your philosophy of therapy development; and you cultivate explicit, nuanced awareness of your intuition (the subtle emotions, impulses and thoughts that arise from moment to moment) - including when it is founded in principles that are wise and skillful, and when it represents an unhelpful coping mechanism left over from a painful life experience.
Unstructured Consultation
Unstructured consultations may be 50 or 80 minutes in length, group or individual, and omit the guided meditation portion described above. The focus of the consultation is on any clinical or self-of-the-therapist material you wish to present for discussion.
Cost
This service is offered by donation. I do this somewhat apologetically, as I know that it offloads the anxiety about fee setting onto you. My intention in this is to include payment as part of the mindful process. Only you can weigh any desire you may have to support this activity against your true ability to pay. You know you have found the right amount when you feel settled, clear and earnest about the amount you have chosen, whatever that may be. For my part, this exercise challenges me to offer what I have to share openly and freely, welcoming each individual simply because they are interested and willing to explore, rather than because of an individual's ability to pay.
